Deal of the Day September 24, 2008

Have you ever visited Solutions?  They’ve got some really cool stuff, perfect for that hard to buy person.

Right now you can save 20% on any one item. Apply coupon code SEP20 at checkout.

Two of the coolest things I found there:

Check out the Edge Brownie Pan. It’s made with specially patented interior sidewalls that gives two toasty edges for every serving. I personally like gooey edges, but I know many people who would love this!

For all the frugalistas out there who want to line dry their clothes but don’t want ugly and unsafe clotheslines in their yards, this clothesline retracts!  Very cool!

They are pricey, but if you had t o shop for MY Dad you’d be happy to find anything at all!

Offer ends 09/25/2008.

I’m so bummed.

AMC Theatres is running this terrific Summer Movie Camp, showing kids movies for only $1 Wednesdays at 10am all summer long. The reason I’m bummed is that the nearest participating theater to me is 45 minutes away. Boo hoo.

Take a look at the lineup:

Movie Schedule (subject to change)

July 23: Bee Movie
July 30: Surf’s Up
August 6: TMNT

Even better, all admission proceeds (caveats galore on their site) from AMC Summer MovieCamp will benefit Variety – The Children’s Charity and the Will Rogers Institute .

Fine. Have fun without us.

Deal of the Day July 2, 2008

It’s double Too Bucks time over at Limited Too. For every $50 spent you’ll earn two $25 Too Bucks and two $15 bonus cards to use on future purchases. This is really a terrific deal, and the best I’ve ever seen from this retailer of girls apparel, shoes, and accessories. Perfectfor back to school!

This is such a good deal that Son is lucky I’m not going to make him wear girl clothes just so I can take advantage. That would be unhealthy. For both of us.

Wouldn’t it?

Deal of the Day July 1, 2008

This Deal of the Day comes to you from a great blog I read called My Money Blog, which I found out about via I’ve Paid For This Twice Already…‘s post Writing A Will, Online Style. Check both blogs out for great info!

On a recent episode of the Suze Orman TV show, she announced that you can go to her website and get her Online Will & Trust kit for free for a limited time. Via Slickdeals. Here’s how to get it:

  • Go to SuzeOrman.com.
  • Click on Will & Trust Kit link on upper left menu.
  • Click the orange Gift Code button.
  • Type in the code “people first”.

The software includes the ability to create a will, a revocable trust, Financial Power of Attorney, and an Advanced Directive / Durable Power of Attorney for Healthcare. One less reason for putting off doing one of these if it’s free! )

I don’t think these are for people with large or complex estates, but check it out if you think it might work for you. And I’m going to recommend having an attorney look over the documents when you’re done. It will be less than them compiling them from start to finish, but you can make sure you’ve done it rightm abd that any unusual things in your situation are handled correctly.

My Lip Is Now the Same Size as My Ass

At least it feels that way.

In addition to every other stress I brought to the dentist today, I was also dealing with a new dentist. I chose him in the most logical, careful, intelligent way possible. I chose his name off our provider list based on his location. After all, it was a crapshoot anyway.

The office? Old and somewhat dingy. The dentist? Youngish. The staff? FANtastic. Son eased the way for me, charming the panties off of all of them.

The dentist seemed young and arrogant, and like all dentists thought that by telling me to relax it would ease my anxiety. After looking at my face I think he realized the ridiculousness of that statement because he added, “Just please don’t kick or punch me.”

“Don’t worry,” I replied. “I’m not a kicker. I’m a moaner and a crier. ” I’m not entirely sure he was relieved.

After looking at my tooth it was determined that a filling had indeed fallen out, but he may not be able to fill it. I may need a root canal and a crown. He’d have to get in there and clean it out before he could tell for sure. I was somewhat skeptical and worried that he’d tell me I needed the root canal whether or not I actually did, but at this point I’m at his mercy.

His assistant came in to go over the figures with me and I was happy to find out that if I did indeed need the root canal and crown I’d pay about $500 out of pocket, about 75% less than the $2000 charge. If he could do just a filling it would be about $100.

Either way I had to have Novacaine. And I hate, hate, hate being numb. And I always need a lot, because my “roots are really deep!” Deep roots. Just what I needed. Two shots, ladies and gentlemen. Woo. Hoo.

We had Son leave the room because I wasn’t sure I could hold it together. They were wonderful and set him up in a room with the books and cars we’d brought, and he continued to charm the staffers even while he roamed the office in search of more bathrooms.

Turns out I got lucky and just needed a filling. That made me feel great because:

a. I wouldn’t have to go through a root canal,

b. I wouldn’t have to pay for a root canal, and

c. The dentist was trustworthy.

And I didn’t cry. Take that Dr. Schorr and Dr. Schachter!

So, here I sit nearly two hours later with a lip that feels just as big as my ass. I’m $100 poorer. But there was a grocery store next to the dentist’s office that I don’t normally go to, and they were selling sirloin steaks buy 1 get two free. So I got 12 very nice sirloins for $18.

I’ll be able to have one when the numbness subsides. I’m figuring it should be gone by Thursday.

And I didn’t cry.

Dread and the Dentist

Kate at One More Thing and I have many things in common. Sometimes our thoughts are eerily the same, and we’d often joke about which one of us was using our brain that day.

Today our lives are, once again, seeming to be right there in line with each other. She’s just posted about her visit to the dentist office today, and her frustration over her inability to meet this challenge with the same aplomb with which she faces the rest of life.

Me too, friend.

I have the same reactions due to some horrible experiences as a child, and the fact that someone working in my mouth is just so personal. With other medical procedures on other parts of the body I can turn my head away and close my eyes – pretend it’s not happening. But when someone’s hand is in my mouth there is no escape. Even when I had a great dentist I could actually be with without out-and-out sobbing, all of the fears and feelings would still be there. I could talk to him and not feel in horrible distress in a particular moment, but the tears would still run down my face…

And, like Kate earlier today, in 45 minutes I have my first dental appointment in nearly five years (before son I was pretty good about going for cleanings twice a year) because I had a filling fall out, and I’m about to get on a plane tomorrow. I’m very stressed, partially over the rigmarole I had to go through this morning to get my provider changed to one that’s NOT an hour away (wonder what I was sniffing the day I chose her!), but mostly because I have to bring Son with me. Son, who has not yet been to a dentist (planned for later this summer), and has never seen his mother a sobbing, sniveling, snotty mess.

So, I’m going to have to take every ounce of my will and determination and grit and try to be a logical, reasonable, non-traumatized patient. I’m worried I won’t be able to pull it off. I don’t want Son to see me in the state I usually am in for dental visits, which usually end with me being such a useless blob of shredded emotions that I go straight home and go to bed for the day (with a kid it becomes clearer why I haven’t been to the dentist since pregnant with him, doesn’t it?).

But if, IF I am successful I will have achieved victory over the two rat bastards that made this fear such an ingrained part of my psyche. And Son will have a chance at normal.

Wish me luck.
